Year in Nature Photography – Day 12

Now that I’m back from my trip I can post a few pictures. From up near York, PA we have a shot of the sky and an ornamental bamboo. Bamboo is often pretty invasive, it spreads fast by rhizomes which look like what you see above ground only running horizontally. The rhizomes are tough to cut and dig up and depending on the type of bamboo can spread out very far and fast. If you should choose to have bamboo in your garden I’d recommend looking for river cane (Arundinaria gigantea) or switch cane (Arundinaria tecta). These bamboo species are native to the south eastern US and so would be a better choice than an non-native invasive bamboo. Even though these bamboos are native they still will spread out rapidly when established and so will require maintenance to prevent them from spreading into unwanted areas. If you do decide to choose a non-native, look for ones that are clumping and who’s spread is more easily managed.
